Music Sampling

Vanilla Ice vs Queen

Many, many great and popular songs have sampled from different genres or different eras, and artists are still able to make the song original. Well, mostly original anyway. So at what point does sampling become stealing? Just how much of a song is subject to copyright laws - individual notes? Bass-lines? Riffs? Lines of lyrics?

One infamous example of sampling gone wrong was when Vanilla Ice, in his breakout "Ice, Ice, Baby" song, sampled Queen's "Under Pressure". However, in an interview, he is seen trying to explain the difference between the songs, and can't even keep a straight face himself. While the interview (right) is entertaining to watch, it did land Vanilla Ice in some legal trouble for not giving Queen due credit for the original.

Can you hear a difference?
